As the University High School (UHS) soccer season draws to a close, Coach Silenok shared her thoughts on the team’s progress, challenges, and achievements. While the season record may not fully reflect the team’s growth, the players have made significant strides, demonstrating resilience and a dedication to improvement.
Starting with a mostly new lineup—85% of players who hadn’t previously played at the varsity level—Coach Silenok had her work cut out for her. “From the beginning of the season to the end, our players, especially our freshmen, gained invaluable experience,” she shared. “They’ve grown individually and learned to play together as a cohesive unit, making major strides in both personal skills and teamwork.”
The competition in their league has also stepped up in recent years, with games consistently becoming more intense. “It used to be that we’d face a few blowouts each season,” Coach Silenok explained. “Now, every game is close, typically within a one- or two-goal difference, which is the level of competitive soccer our players are excited to experience.”
The season also saw standout performances from key players, including freshman Lucas Escobosa, who rose to the challenge as goalkeeper. “Even though he’s young, he made some unbelievable saves. Lucas showed the kind of talent and focus you usually see in a much more experienced keeper,” Coach Silenok noted. Junior Shabato Munasero also made an impact as a versatile player, seamlessly filling roles across the field and providing much-needed stability for the team.
One of the most significant challenges this season was overcoming a lack of experience and cohesion among new players, as many of their competitors benefit from middle school feeder programs that UHS does not have. Additionally, injuries to two key players from their co-op team, Prince Tech, impacted the lineup. The team’s primary goal scorer and a solid defender were sidelined early in the season, requiring less experienced players to step into these crucial roles.
Despite these setbacks, Coach Silenok is especially proud of her team’s spirit. “This is the only season in our history where we didn’t make the postseason. Yet, they went into each game with the mindset to compete and win,” she shared. “Our seniors deserve a lot of credit for rallying the team and giving their all, game after game. They never let the season’s challenges defeat their determination.”
The season has laid a strong foundation for next year, with younger players gaining valuable experience. Coach Silenok’s leadership and the team’s perseverance have fostered a sense of unity and grit that promises a bright future for UHS soccer
