The UHSSE Early College Experience (ECE) Marine Science class won the People’s Choice Award which has school communities vote for their boat, and their favorite boats from other schools. “This is where UHSSE and our Community Shines!” said UHSSE ECE Marine Science/Honors Marine Science teacher/magnet coordinator Caryn Baseler. “The ECE students kept everyone up to date on the progress of the boat, and we let everyone know about voting on Parent Square. The votes got us into the final round, and even though the final round of voting was 12am -7am, the UHSSE community showed up and got us the win!”
UConn sponsors the cardboard boat race every fall for all ECE Marine Science classes. There is also a race between UConn faculty staff and ECE instructors. The ECE students researched boat designs, planned, made, and assembled parts. Mrs. Baseler also said that it didn’t look like much until the week of the race, but then the assembly really took off.
In terms of using strategies during the competition and preparing for the race, students researched and looked at designs from past years. Every year the students in ECE Marine Science leave feedback and lessons learned for students who take the class the following year.
