At University High School of Science and Engineering, students are proving that hard work pays off. According to U.S. News, our school was ranked #1 in the entire country for state assessments performances.
This is a huge accomplishment because our school is very diverse. About 50% of students are Black, 30% are Hispanic, and 20% are White, with some Pacific Islander students too. About 68% of students are low-income. Normally, schools with those numbers typically meet lower scores but at UHSSE students exceeded those expectations.
Mr. Tomany, principal at UHSSE, says this proves that the achievement gap can be closed no matter where the students come from. UHSSE helps them reach their goals. Students work hard everyday by going to tutoring, NHS sessions, and even Saturday Academy.
On top of test scores, UHSSE students also take college-level classes through UConn and UHART. The school is finding new ways to make sure more students can take these classes, not just the ones with the highest test scores.
Being ranked #1 in the nation shows that UHSSE is not just a school, it’s a place where students believe in themselves and can achieve amazing things.
