This year’s UConn ECE Marine Science Boat Race was a big success for students, who spent six to seven class periods designing and building their boat. The team was inspired by a shark to match the Jaws theme. They carefully planned, voted on the best design, and constructed a boat they hoped would finish the race in one piece and place in the top three.
Their hard work paid off. The boat not only completed the race without damage but also finished third in their heat and won the People’s Choice Award. This marks the third consecutive year the award went to this class. Students loved the shark design, and many said it was their favorite part of the project.
The day was perfect for racing, with sunny skies and 80-degree weather. Students also enjoyed presentations from four UConn marine science lecturers, met Jonathan the UConn Husky, and ended the day with UConn Dairy Bar ice cream on the beach. According to their teacher, this year’s students showed clear improvement from past years, and the class left a memorable mark on the annual race.
