Softball team looks to take next step this season
Softball spring season is officially here at University High School. The first week of practice starts on March 20.
Head Coach Marcelino Diaz and Assistant Coach Nicole Silenok both return for another year with the team.
Last year’s team went 8-13 and made states but did not pass the first round. They were 5-12 in their conference.
The team lost CRAL All-Conference team member Reilly Fournier, who graduated, but Celine Diaz ‘24, who also made All-Conference, returns. There will also be several new players.
Right field and center fielder Radhika Thaker ’25 said that “This year we would be definitely better with additional experience, and the fact that coach is working hard into making us better all around.”
Grishma Jampal ’25 also has “high expectations” for this year’s Softball team.
In order to improve this year’s season Thaker said “our coach could spend additional time teaching more of the players’ positions”
“Our team needs to practice due to us having a lot of newbies and many lower-classmen last year,” Jampal said. “A team goal would be to win more games and go further than first rounds of states.”
There will be a scrimmage against Cheney Tech on March 30 at 3 pm at Annie Fisher. The first game will be on April 3 against Prince Tech.
Last year UHSSE softball team made states last year but did not pass the first round. This year, hopefully, they will make states.
