Math team is a club that takes place every Tuesday during activity block. They meet to practice challenging math problems in varying topics such as Algebra and Probability. Throughout the year they compete in six meets against highschools all over Hartford county.
The team had their first meet of the year on October 9 at Avon High School. Last year the team qualified for the States competition but unfortunately could not compete due to other scheduling conflicts.
“Some goals that the math team has is to regularly practice and cooperate with each other,” said Jaish Venkatesan ‘27. “We will prepare for the competitions by using the last competition questions for practice.”
“One of the team’s top goals this year is to qualify for the state meet,” said Emmet Spaeth ‘25. ” We have a number of new freshmen who have joined the team and we always try to make them feel accepted.”
“ We are hoping to continue building our team and we would like to qualify and compete in states,” said math team coach Kate Grayeb. “I enjoy coaching math teams because a lot of students come to our school because they are interested in math and science and this team allows students to be challenged outside the standard math curriculum.”
Math team has their next meet on November 13, 2024 at Newington High School. They hope to continue practicing and improving their skills for this meet to hopefully beat many of the other schools competing. Coaches Ms. Grayeb and Mr. Carson Dunn will continue to train the team in different concepts ranging from algebra to statistics. Even though the team may have a disadvantage to other schools with less people they are still going to try our best and build our team.
