Football team clinches top seed in state playoffs

The SMSA/University co-op football team is heading into the playoffs undefeated.

The University High School/SMSA Varsity football team is holding on to their undefeated record with 10 wins and 0 losses.

With the season coming to a close players have some memorable memories of this season, Ife Oluborode ‘24 says “My favorite part of the season is how everyone is always motivated to keep winning so everyone is practicing as hard as they can.”

Another player Jeffrey Gilliam ‘25 (#30) says “my favorite memory was when our quarterback (Danny Hernandez ‘23 of SMSA) juked 7 players.”

Jeffery Gilliam ‘25 expects for the rest of this season for  “our team just works on doing the little stuff we’ll go state championship and work on our blocks and to give 100% effort in the whole game and not getting complacent because we have all this talent in our team we just ain’t put it into full circle across the board yet.”

Oluborode ‘24 expects the team to “keep winning!” for the rest of the season.

The best teams the TigerHawks have played so far are Rockville and Granby. Oluborode says “it is difficult playing the best teams but that has made us all stronger as players”

This is the latest in the season the football team has ever been ranked number one.

Danny Hernandez’ 23 has stood out this season because last year the football team used to be one of the worst teams in the league, he helped make the team an unstoppable one, he’s has 14 passing touchdowns plus 1670 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns.

The team won their last game 35-7 over Windsor Locks/Suffield/East Granby on Nov. 18. They are awaiting their matchup for the state tournament, which will be announced on Nov. 25.
